Carmichael Coal Mine Project: 9,000 New QLD Jobs?

coal mining in QueenslandAdani Group, a global integrated infrastructure player, today announced the completion of the single largest and most comprehensive coal mining exploration programme undertaken in Australia.

This mining exploration program has established reserves of as much as 10 billion tonnes of JORC standard Coal Resources, and the Adani Group is now ready to step up its $10 billion Carmichael Mine Project, the largest single coal tenement in the world, which will include the following:

  • A World Class Mine
  • Rail Infrastructure (A 400km railway line connecting the Carmichael Mine to the Abbot Point Port’s coal terminal)
  • Port Infrastructure (Increase capacity of the Abbot Point coal terminal (near Bowen) for exports to its power plants in India).

This would be a massive project for not only the Queensland economy, but also will see a large increase in jobs in the area.

What Jobs Will the Carmichael Coal Mine Project Create?

Mr. Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, expects the project to create a total of 9,000 new Queensland jobs over two stages:

  • 5,000 Jobs – These jobs will be created during the construction phase of the project.
  • 4,000 Jobs – Once construction is complete 4,000 positions will be created in the production phase of the project.

Adani are Committed to Hiring Local Workers

One great piece of information that has come out of the Adani Group themselves is their desire to help meet the demand for skilled workers in Australia’s resources sector but providing on-the-job training opportunities to local residents.

In fact, Adani Mining has also recently sponsored a pilot apprenticeship scheme to this affect.

Production Time Frame

Campbell Newman,Queensland’s Premier pledged to grant all regulatory and environmental approvals by the end of 2013, and Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani announced that his company expected to export its first coal shipment by January 2016.
